Instagram post 18069392815367588 LAND is pleased to celebrate Jackie Amézquita (@jackieamezquita) as part of the inaugural cohort of artists to receive the recently launched Mohn LAND Grants.

Mohn LAND Grants is a new and ambitious initiative to introduce, and invest in, emerging Los Angeles artists, providing them with a platform to present site-responsive, transdisciplinary work across Los Angeles County and to serve as a first formal public presentation. Over a five year cycle, up to 20 artists will receive Mohn LAND Grants to realize intentional and community-focused public projects ranging from large-scale sculpture commissions to street level interventions. The initiative reflects LAND’s mission to empower artists to have autonomy over the presentation of their work and in more direct relationship with the public.

Jackie Amézquita (b. 1985, Quetzaltenango, Guatemala) migrated to the U.S. in 2003. Her work explores narratives of migration and how people navigate power structures and unites performances, site specific activations, installations and organic materials such as masa, soil, salt, hydrated lime, and produce to explore a visual language that investigates modes of adaptation, and integration in the aftermath of migration.

This weekend, LAND is partnering with @welcometolace to present Jackie Amézquita's Gemidos de la Tierra (Wailings of the Land/Soil) as a citywide procession across Los Angeles. Learn more about Jackie's project and the Mohn LAND Grants at the link in our bio.

Instagram post 18321581308076907 Amir H. Fallah's (@amirhfallah) solo exhibition A War on Wars, on view at Shulamit Nazarian (@shulamitnazarian), features new paintings and sculptures by the LA-based artist and closes this Saturday, March 25th.

The exhibition title, A War on Wars, suggests an active resistance to conflict, one that is centered on awareness, education, and protest. Fallah was born in Iran and lived in the country during the Iran-Iraq war. This exhibition draws from early childhood memories of wartime, combined with a consideration of contemporary global conflicts. Synthesized through painting and sculpture, the artist combines a range of imagery to invoke parables that address an ever-shifting geo-political landscape and structure of power. You can read more about Amir’s work in the @nytimes profile published yesterday.

A War on Wars coincides with Fallah’s public project CHANT in support of human rights in Iran. The debut presentation of a large-scale neon artwork will be displayed on the gallery’s facade on La Brea Avenue in Hollywood concurrent with his solo exhibition. A radiant sun—in reference to ancient Persian traditions and a contemporary symbol of dissent—bears the face of a woman. While Persian rulers have added and removed the sun’s gender to validate their own power and authority throughout history, Fallah reclaims the symbolic female sun to foreground women’s rights, elevating the power of people rather than any one ruler. Interchangeably displaying "WOMAN. LIFE. FREEDOM" in Farsi, English, and the phonetic Farsi, CHANT operates as a beacon of light carrying the rallying cry of the ongoing liberation movement in Iran.

As part of LAND’s ongoing project, Signs for Change, and in partnership with Fallah, LAND has commissioned a wearable artwork to raise awareness and funds for two human rights organizations: Omid Foundation (@omid_foundation) and The Center for Human Rights In Iran (@centerforhumanrights). The T-shirt is launching alongside CHANT. Pre-order a CHANT T-Shirt at the link in our bio.

Instagram post 18253311292148677 As Nowruz, the Iranian New Year is celebrated around the globe, LAND is pleased to announce the latest iteration of our ongoing project, Signs for Change, with artist Amir H. Fallah @amirhfallah. Amir has identified @omid_foundation and @centerforhumanrights as recipients from the project proceeds, two organizations committed to uplifting human rights advocacy in Iran.

LAND has commissioned a wearable artwork in the form of a T-shirt featuring Fallah’s large-scale public sculpture, CHANT, currently on view in Hollywood @shulamitnazarian. Stemming from recent protests that raged across Iran, ignited by the brutal murder of Jina (Mahsa) Amini, CHANT carries the rallying cry of the movement “WOMAN. LIFE. FREEDOM.” in the colors of the Iranian flag, distilling our anger into a demand that can and must be met. Written in English, Farsi, and the phonetic Farsi, these translations are important to diasporic Iranians whose relationship with the written language is in the phonetic form.

We mark the start of this Iranian New Year by uplifting the Iranian community through this work, a community that is deeply embedded in the city of Los Angeles. CHANT represents a universal light, the beauty in femininity, and the strength of the Iranian people, who for decades have been united in a struggle for freedom.

We invite you to learn more about the significance of this project and purchase a shirt at the link in bio. 50% of proceeds will go to @omid_foundation and @centerforhumanrights
