As LAND celebrates our 15th anniversary, we’re looking back at some of the projects and programs in our organization’s history.⁠

In December 2010, LAND Director and Curator Shamim M. Momin, Aaron Bondaroff and Al Moran, Creative Directors of OHWOW, organized a one-evening exhibition. Installed at Flagler Memorial Island, “the island” featured the work of 17 artists, including newly commissioned installations, sculptures, multi-media works, and ephemeral interventions.⁠

Visitors were transported to “the island” by boat and received maps that guided them through foliage, sandbars, and into the water itself to discover the artworks on view. ⁠Seen here is one of those pieces: “Count Matchuki’s Last Selection” (2010) by Luis Gispert. The 10-foot tall palm frond, painted gold, slowly rotated on a base in one of the island’s clearings, paying homage to Jamaican deejay Count Matchuki.⁠

We hope to see you on Saturday, November 23 from 12pm-1pm for a special reading @francoisghebaly. For her latest exhibition, “Las plantas de ese jardín conservaban en la sombra sus colores,” Los Angeles-based Argentinian painter Patricia Iglesias Peco (@patopeco) continues her exploration of the natural world. Peco draws influence from the Uruguayan poet Marosa di Giorgio (1932-2004) and the feminine cosmology elaborated in her writing. Enjoy an afternoon of readings featuring the work of di Giorgio from invited readers. Free to attend; link in bio to RSVP.
