Los Angeles Nomadic Division is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2024 Mohn LAND Grants: Carlos Agredano (@homeboysdontcry), Lizette Hernandez (@lizette_hernandez._), Vincent Enrique Hernandez (@vincent.e.hernandez) and Daid Roy (@daidroy.jpg). ⁠
⁠
Introduced in 2023, Mohn LAND Grants set out as a new initiative to invest in emerging Los Angeles artists by providing them with a platform to present site-responsive, transdisciplinary work across LA County. Developed with art collectors and philanthropists, Pamela and @jarlmohn who have increased their support from the inaugural year. Participating artists are selected to receive grants towards production of new public projects. ⁠

Artists were selected by a curatorial committee at LAND—comprised of director Laura Hyatt (@lhyatt), and curators-at-large Bryan Barcena (@bryan.barcena) and Irina Gusin (@irina.gusin)—and based on a criteria of artistic excellence, a depth of community engagement, and the potential of the support to elevate each artist's career and overall practice.⁠

According to the curatorial team, “this year’s cohort of Mohn LAND Grantees were selected because their methodologies represent new ways of working through conceptual and aesthetic concerns, while also creating profound connections to the city around them.” ⁠

Join LAND on Saturday, April 27th for the next iteration of Soundscapes, our programming series dedicated to experimental music and sound-based practices. ⁠

Multidisciplinary sound artist Alan Poma (@alanpoma001) presents The Gold Fish, curated by Paulina Lara (@lapau3_), a performance reimagining the birth of a mythical creature from the man-made wetlands adjacent to Lake Titicaca. Alan draws parallels between the basins surrounding the lake, and the artifice of Augustus F. Hawkins Nature Park in Los Angeles. At dawn and dusk, Alan captured sounds from nature throughout the park. The soundscape also incorporates daily pedestrian and car traffic to bring contemporary life into the composition. ⁠

The work combines audiovisual elements that reposition Amerindian cultural traditions in a non-linear future to establish connections between Amerindian traditions through shared cosmologies. On Saturday, April 27th, Alan will play eight field recordings on cassette, rescore, and live mix the works on site at Augustus F. Hawkins Nature Park. ⁠

“Quintana found that cyanotypes — once used for architectural designs — could serve as an emotional and cultural blueprint of L.A. This art form would allow him to engage with subjects, bringing people, objects and locales into focus while adding context to signage and exteriors like walls, gates and sidewalks, which Street View often neglects. The manual approach of cyanotypes, countering the rapidness of Google technology and digital characteristics, offered Quintana time to thoughtfully develop the image.”

LAND is thrilled to be participating at Frieze Los Angeles @friezeofficial this year with a solo booth by @felixfquintana in the nonprofit tent alongside @gyopo.us @peoplespotteryproject @ambosproject @gallery90220 @reparations.club.

We will be presenting a selection of unique artworks for sale in support of our multisite exhibition with Felix, fantasma paraiso / phantom paradise currently on view @plazamexicola and @artdivisionla.

Entrance to the nonprofit tent is free and does not require tickets to the main fair. Come say hi!
