Update: Due to the devastating fires across Los Angeles, the conversation and celebration for Field Permits will no longer take place on Sunday, January 12 and will be rescheduled for a later date in the coming weeks. We are keeping everyone in our thoughts during this challenging time.

Field Permits, organized and presented by Los Angeles Nomadic Division (LAND), is a work of civic institutional critique taking place over sixteen successive Sundays on a soccer field at Albion Riverside Park in Lincoln Heights. Ordinarily, the “public” soccer fields operated by the city of Los Angeles are only available for use through a permitting system and require the payment of a fee and the obtainment of liability insurance to be booked for play. Hernandez’s project involves navigating the civic bureaucracy to secure the permits and open up the space to anyone who wants to use the field to do so.⁠

Every Sunday through April 6, 2025, from 2 to 4PM, the public is invited to utilize one of the soccer fields at Albion Riverside Park as they see fit.

This year, LAND stayed true to our mission of connecting people and places through art across Los Angeles, organizing exhibitions and programs everywhere from Lynwood to Malibu. ⁠

Thinking about 2025 can feel daunting, but the LAND community is strong. The last 15 years as an organization have shown us that, and we can’t wait to see what our next chapter will look like. ⁠

We’re committed to continue bringing art to the public—as a salve, and a tool for storytelling and connection. ⁠

Our LAND 15 memories continue: From 2018-2020, as part of Los Angeles Water School (LAWS), Oscar Tuazon’s functional artwork and experimental school, LAND hosted a series of public events devoted to the water of Los Angeles. ⁠
⁠
The series explored the complex life of water in Los Angeles, through the lens of local history, architecture, politics, and art. Through this collaborative process tracing how water connects diverse communities within Los Angeles and across the continent, working from a micro to macro understanding of policy and infrastructure, Tuazon created a setting for the exchange of cross-disciplinary ideas and learning.⁠ Participants included the late Tongva elder Julia Bogany, the Executive Director of Sacred Places Institute for Indigenous Peoples Angela Mooney D’Arcy, and Chairman Rupert Steele of the Confederated Tribes of the Goshute Nation, among many others. ⁠

Field Permits by artist Vincent Enrique Hernandez, organized and presented by Los Angeles Nomadic Division (LAND), is a work of civic institutional critique taking place over 16 successive Sundays on a soccer field at Albion Riverside Park in Downtown Los Angeles. ⁠
⁠
Every Sunday between December 22, 2024 through April 6, 2025, and from 2 to 4PM, Hernandez will invite the public to access a soccer field, and engage with it as they see fit. Hernandez, a 2024 MOHN Grant artist born and raised in Los Angeles, is an avid amateur soccer player. The artist has a deep interest in the ways that public space is mediated by city organizations, which often create unnecessary burdens and hurdles that prevent communities from accessing, and utilizing, recreational third spaces in their own neighborhoods.⁠

As part of Field Permits, Hernandez will inform the community of the availability of the soccer field for free play through posters and other materials that showcase his training as a sign painter, and which will respond to the architectural and design elements of the area. ⁠
